Rye Community Garden is celebrating being awarded National Lottery funding for a waterless toilet. The garden is receiving just under £10,000 to buy and install a fully accessible toilet cubicle at its Love Lane site.
Nigel Jennings from the garden committee said, “This is really good news. It’s been a longstanding aim of ours to install a toilet at the community garden. It will benefit not just users of the garden but neighbouring allotment holders too. We’d like to thank local people who play the National Lottery for their support and to let them know that they’re making a difference in our community. We’d also like to thank the Marina Allotment and Horticultural Association for giving us some helpful advice with our application, based on their own success in getting National Lottery funding for a similar toilet at their site in St Leonards on Sea.”
The chosen toilet is environmentally friendly as it only needs sun and wind to function. This is essential at a location with no mains water supply or drainage. The gardeners will be working with their landlords, Rye Amenity CIC and the Rye Allotments Association to finalise details of the installation which it’s hoped to complete by the spring.
