It’s all about the bees…

Transition Rye has close links with Rother Environmental Group, so we’d like to take this opportunity to publicise an event they are running on Tuesday 28 January at 7:15pm for 7:30pm at the Queens Head, Landgate, Rye:

REG are pleased to welcome a guest speaker at Tuesday’s REG meeting, Dr Nikki Gammon from the charity Hymettus. Nikki has been involved in the project to re-introduce the short-haired bumblebee to Dungeness. Wide-spread in the 1950s it was last recorded in the UK in 1988 near Dungeness and was declared officially extinct in 2000. Nikki’s talk will provide a background to the current plight of bees (especially bumblebees) in the UK – changed habitats, use of pesticides and herbicides, new diseases have all taken their toll. But projects such as this one at Dungeness provide hope. All are welcome for what should be an interesting talk and discussion.

For more background to the project see this RSPB link.
